Pentagon readies new battery strategy amid growing drone demands
The Pentagon is developing a new battery strategy, set for release in 2026, to address the rising demand for reliable, standardized, and domestically sourced batteries that power drones, vehicles, ships, and weapons systems across all military branches. Building on its 2023 lithium-ion battery plan, the updated strategy—mandated by Congress—will focus on strengthening supply chains, securing critical minerals (many of which currently come from China), and setting standards to ensure readiness in future conflicts. Driven by lessons from Ukraine and the rapid growth of drone warfare, the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps are engaging industry to accelerate innovation, standardization, and production. With billions of dollars now allocated for critical minerals and defense battery programs, the Pentagon aims to secure energy solutions that can keep pace with evolving technology and warfighting needs, while ensuring industry partners understand forthcoming requirements.
