Korean Defense Industry Embraces AI Technology
The competition for leadership in defense artificial intelligence (AI) technology is intensifying. Not only defense industry giants like Hanwha and LIG Nex1 but also IT companies like KT Corp. have entered the fray, attracting talent and developing technology in related fields. As interest in sovereign AI grows following the selection of five elite teams for an independent AI foundation model, attention is focused on whether innovative AI that could change the future of the Korean military’s operational system will emerge in the defense sector, where localization is essential.
According to the IT industry on Aug. 17, KT is recruiting personnel to discover and propose AI projects related to defense battlefield and weapon systems. They prefer experienced professionals who have developed defense IT software in major defense companies or have practical experience in planning defense ICT projects. An IT industry insider said, “It is unusual for an IT company to directly recruit defense industry talent,” adding, “This shows KT’s strong commitment to commercializing defense AI.”
In March this year, KT formed a partnership with Palantir, a leading global defense AI player. CEO Kim Young-seop personally traveled to the United States to discuss cooperation plans with Alex Karp, co-founder and CEO of Palantir. Palantir is considered to be at the forefront of defense AI technology, having contracted with the U.S. Department of Defense to build an AI-based military operations support system called “Titan.”
