Defence Minister says Ottawa will take ‘immediate and decisive action’ to rebuild military
At the CANSEC trade show in Ottawa, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced that the Canadian government will take swift and decisive action to rebuild its military amid rising global threats, citing historical urgency and international examples of defence prioritization. With over $30.9 billion earmarked for defence in the Liberal Party’s spending plan, Canada is set to join ReArm Europe, a major EU defence procurement initiative aimed at strengthening domestic defence industries and partnerships. This move follows a suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine and growing pressure from NATO and former President Trump for increased defence spending. Despite the announcement, McGuinty avoided media questions, and tensions with the U.S. remain as Canada faces pressure to meet a proposed NATO defence target of 5% of GDP.
