Royal Navy supports key Solent trials to help Artificial Intelligence identify boats and their occupants

In a substantial MOD exercise, a flotilla of 13 vessels, supported by 130 personnel, drones, a light aircraft, and over 50 cameras and sensors, engaged in various maritime maneuvers in the Solent to provide data for developing AI systems. Conducted by Dstl and the Royal Navy, this five-day event aimed to collect a vast array of visual, infrared, sonar, and radar data, along with metadata, to create a 'training dataset' for AI to distinguish between coordinated actions typical of military operations and random patterns of civilian behavior. Despite challenges like 40-knot winds, the exercise—which spanned from Hurst Castle to Browndown and included both synchronised and chaotic beach landings—generated critical data, assisting the Ministry of Defence and its partners in advancing ethical AI development for defense purposes.
