Navy’s 2-year-old robot task force eyes more AI
A 4th Fleet version of TF59 is in the works, and its lessons are headed to the Pacific as well.
Two years after its inception, the U.S. Navy's Task Force 59 (TF59) is pioneering advancements in AI and drone technology to develop a hybrid fleet. Capt. Colin Corridan, TF59's commander, emphasized the group's innovative ethos, revealing that they have tested 15 drone types in 55,000 operating hours. TF59 recently concluded a sophisticated operation in the Strait of Hormuz, combining manned crews with unmanned vehicles. They aim to refine AI capabilities to identify threats swiftly, increasing the efficiency of drone operations. TF59's success with commercial drones has shown their potential in challenging regions like the Persian Gulf. While their work initially focused on the 5th Fleet's operations, lessons from TF59 will be integrated into the 4th Fleet's efforts to combat illegal activities in South America. The Pacific region will also benefit from TF59's insights, adapting them to different demands and environmental conditions. The future of TF59 sees a potential shift from contractor-owned models to government-owned drones to better align with military operations.
