NGA Harnessing Digital Twins as DOD Embraces Emerging Tech, Says Agency Director VADM Frank Whitworth III
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Director, Vice Admiral Frank Whitworth III, described the Department of Defense's current shift as a "reluctant revolution in military affairs." This transformation involves uncrewing significant portions of operational components through the use of modern autonomous technologies. While these technologies promise extreme capabilities and reduced risk to troops, there is cultural hesitance within the military to fully embrace them. Whitworth noted that this hesitance is based on a longstanding ethos among American warfighters but emphasized the need to adapt to evolving threats and technology. The NGA is harnessing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and digital twins, which are virtual models of real-world systems, to support the military's Joint All-Domain Command and Control strategy. They aim to expand the concept of a digital twin to encompass dynamic foundation data for the entire globe, providing near real-time updates across all domains.
