The service “will use Project Linchpin to develop and deploy trusted AI & ML capabilities to intelligence, cyber, and electronic warfare sensor systems,” Col. Chris Anderson, project manager for intelligence systems and analytics, said.

The U.S. Army has awarded Booz Allen Hamilton and Red Hat an initial contract valued up to $2M for Project Linchpin. The initiative marks the Army’s premiere program centered on establishing a reliable artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) pipeline. Project Linchpin will be guided by the principles of Traceability, Observability, Replaceability, and Consumability (TORC), aiming to uphold data and model integrity, encourage data openness, and implement modular open system architecture (MOSA) designs. This venture envisions developing an AI/ML operational environment tailored for the Army's intelligence, cyber, and electronic warfare sensor systems. Col. Chris Anderson stated that this significant move is a precursor to separate AI from software, enhance security layers, and incorporate the foremost technologies from various sectors, including industry, academia, and government. While the current contract spans six months, with potential extensions for up to five years, it marks the start of multiple expected contracts under Project Linchpin. Despite the progress, officials have expressed reservations about the project's vast scope, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach and industry input to define and refine the AI/ML ecosystem.
