Washington seeks talks with Beijing on rulemaking amid renewed diplomacy

The U.S. plans to introduce a resolution outlining international norms for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in weapon systems at the United Nations next month. This move comes as the U.S. and other countries, including China, advance their AI-enabled military capabilities. Recently, the U.S. successfully tested an AI-flown modified F-16 fighter jet. The proposed norms will be discussed in the First Committee of the U.N. General Assembly, which focuses on disarmament and international security. These guidelines are expected to reflect the State Department's "Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy" released earlier in February. This declaration emphasizes the responsible use of AI in the military, adherence to international humanitarian laws, and the necessity for human involvement in crucial decision-making processes related to nuclear weapons. The U.S. has faced some criticism for its stance on AI in weaponry, especially from developing countries. Nonetheless, there's a visible effort to engage in diplomatic talks, notably with China, to establish common ground on AI military norms and risk reduction.
