Japan Requests Largest Defense Budget Ever

Published on August 31, 2023

Japan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) has requested a record $52.9 billion defense budget for the fiscal year 2024, aimed at countering growing military threats from China, North Korea, and Russia. The proposed budget includes plans to construct two Aegis system-equipped vessels (ASEVs) and two new Future Frigates (FFMs), along with significant upgrades to existing platforms. The new ASEVs will be considerably larger than current Aegis-equipped destroyers, featuring advanced weapon systems such as U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles and high-power anti-drone lasers. The budget also outlines the continued modification of Izumo-class helicopter carriers to support F-35B fighter aircraft, the development of new electronic warfare aircraft, and a co-development program with the U.S. for a Glide Phase Interceptor. Investments are also planned for unmanned systems, including unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and underwater vehicles (UUVs), as well as new capabilities for island defense and maritime logistics support.
