Indian Navy to get counter-drone systems for warships to combat threats from Pakistan, China

Published on August 31, 2023

The Indian Navy is investing Rs 490 crore to acquire counter-drone systems for its warships and naval bases to address emerging threats from enemy drones, particularly from Pakistan and China. The procurement, detailed in a Request for Information (RFI) document issued on August 29, will focus on systems capable of installation on ships and land-based establishments, with 360-degree radar coverage to detect and track drones from 5 km or more. The move follows similar initiatives by the Indian Army and Air Force. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with support from the Indian Navy, the counter-drone systems will be manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited. These systems will be able to jam drone communication frequencies, evaluate threats, prioritize targets, and engage multiple threats with quick response times.
