Connectivity will ‘make or break’ US military use of AI, official says

Schuyler Moore, U.S. Central Command’s chief technology officer, claims that advancements in artificial intelligence and advanced computing capabilities will prove worthless without a concomitant increase in battlefield and troop connectivity. Moore notes, strikingly, that ‘Algorithms on their own are increasingly less interesting to us.’ She instead highlights the importance of the proper classification of data and the available bandwidth to carry out operations and communications.

The value of ‘network infrastructure’ is rearing its head as the United States prepares for the possibility of conflict with either Russia or China in Europe or the Pacific, particularly because both are likely capable of ‘hampering U.S. military communications and resisting its targeting and attacks.’ Department-wide efforts, chief among them the Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2), are thus top of mind for decision-makers like Moore when it comes to adopting and leveraging AI.
