Romania awards $321 million contract for Turkish TB2 combat drones
The Romanian Ministry of National Defense awards Turkish defense company Baykar a $321 million contract (approximately €290 million) for the purchase of TB2 uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to an announcement from August 2022, the TB2s will be ‘intended for Romanian Land Forces’ along with ‘the purchase of an initial logistical support package, necessary training and equipment.’
Following Poland, Romania will become the second European country to operate TB2s as well as the third NATO member to order them, outside of Turkey itself. The Ministry’s acquisitions come as the Romanian Army is transformed according to a 2040 timeline in which equipment and weaponry are aligned with greater flexibility, situational awareness, and increased firepower.
