SIPRI and UNODA launch joint initiative on responsible innovation in AI for peace and security

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) launch a three-year joint initiative on ‘responsible innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) for peace and security.’ The initiative seeks to mitigate risks arising from the misuses of civilian AI technologies and the threats they pose to international peace and security.

Both SIPRI and UNODA express their beliefs that AI can be either beneficial or harmful. Where the latter is concerned, ‘political disinformation, cyberattacks, terrorism, or military operations’ rank high on their list of priorities. The two organizations wish to highlight their existing research showing that civilian researchers tend to be unaware of the potential risks of civilian AI technologies and how they can address them.
