EU scrutinizes Emirati takeover of Estonian robotics firm

The European Commission is investigating the surprise takeover of Estonia-based Milrem Robotics by the United Arab Emirates-based EDGE Group. The investigation follows an initial concern that foreign businesses or governments can tap into European defense cooperation projects.

When the EDGE Group acquired a majority share in Milrem in February 2023, the Commission found out only ‘mere days’ before the announcement. The takeover also comes just before the Estonian parliament closed a legal loophole concerning foreign direct investment (FDI) screening. Funding availability for the European Defence Fund is now on the line with this case.
