Integrating artificial intelligence into military aircraft is, writes Mike Pietrucha, ‘a logical extension of the automation trend’ that began over a century ago. The possibilities for human-machine teaming, decision assistants, and fully autonomous aircraft are becoming evident.
The early successes of programs including autopilot and the F-16’s Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System provided proof that automation in defense can both save lives and increase utility. The ‘AI crew member’ is now on the horizon. While the technologies are still in their early days, intelligent voice communication is highlighted as a noteworthy potential for AI-enabled aircraft of the future.
