Robot dogs are taking over the US military

Semi-autonomous quad-legged unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs), also known as ‘robotic dogs,’ continue to be acquired by the United States military. The latest contract is awarded to robotic security firm Asylon ‘for the augmentation of military working dogs.’

Philadelphia-based robotics company Ghost Robotics’ Q-UGVs are especially prominent in US Air Force installations. The company believes these robotic dogs can host ‘a number of unique sensor payloads suited to a variety of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) roles.’ The Q-UGV acts as a sort of ‘delivery system’ for its equipped sensors. These collect or transmit data to enhance the situational awareness of human soldiers.
