US, Japan, South Korea Launch Forum to Cut Off Chips to China

The United States’ Biden administration launches a dialogue forum with Japan and South Korea on the ‘friend-shoring’ of semiconductors. The initiative comes as the US ‘invites companies to compete for a share of the $50 billion already approved to revitalize the U.S. chip industry.’

Japan and South Korea are home to two of the world’s most prominent semiconductor industries. While concerns with Chinese access to advanced semiconductors are present among all three state actors, the forum is designed to prevent unintended industry consequences resulting from a lack of trilateral coordination. South Korea and Japan specifically seek clarity on the implications of US export controls towards China on their own domestic industries.
