Lethal autonomous weapons inquiry launched by House of Lords
The House of Lords Artificial Intelligence in Weapon Systems Committee is set to begin collecting evidence on the proper development and uses of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS).
While the United Kingdom does not currently have a precise definition of an ‘autonomous weapon system,’ their call for evidence describes ‘weapons systems which can select, detect and engage targets with little to no human intervention.’ The Committee, in their call, places particular importance on the level of human control over semi- or fully autonomous weapon systems and the challenges of determining what degree of ‘international cooperation in the interest of control’ is possible. The UK Ministry of Defence will be among those providing evidence to the Committee.
