AI-wielding tech firms are giving a new shape to modern warfare
The Ukrainian military’s use of AI-enabled weapons and autonomous surveillance systems is turning the region into a ‘testing ground’ for AI companies. The deployment of interlinked satellites, sensors, uncrewed drones, and software has led some to give data-centric tools the name, ‘Uber for artillery.’
High-profile figures in tech are behind this new form of warfare. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is responsible for the use of Starlink satellites (now restricted from battlefield use); Palmer Luckey’s Anudril has provided autonomous systems to Ukraine; and Alex Karp’s Palantir has indicated that his company is aiding Ukrainian targeting efforts through AI-governed software. This experimental form of warfare comes as the US Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit sets up efforts to acquire and deploy commercial technologies like AI and autonomy.
