Nations near agreement on use of military AI
An international group of government and military officials and academics agree to issue a joint call to action on the responsible development and use of AI in military affairs.
The Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain summit held in the Netherlands on February 15-16 gave stakeholders the first opportunity of its kind to hash out a framework for responsible military AI. Among the issues discussed are AI’s problems with reliability, the role of human operators in AI decision-making, the consequences of AI use, and the possibility of risk escalation by developing or employing AI-enabled military technologies. Thus far, 60 countries have signed on to the United States’ declaration on responsible AI uses in military affairs announced at the summit.
