Japan to Replace Attack, Observation Helicopters with Drone Fleet
Published on February 9, 2023
Japan’s new defense buildup plans indicate that its attack and observation helicopters are ‘obsolete.’ The Defense Ministry intends to replace these vehicles with various kinds of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS).
Among the planned UAS replacements appear to be loitering munitions and medium-altitude, long-endurance drones. While Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force helicopters will be armed according to the minimum required capabilities, a reduction and reorganization of force personnel will occur. Japan’s naval force is also interested in acquiring uncrewed systems with wide-area maritime surveillance capabilities. The changes in force structure come as Japan increases its defense budget to record levels.
