The Stratosphere Will Be Telecom’s Next Frontier
SoftBank, in partnership with U.S.-based Sceye, is preparing to launch a new type of 4G/5G telecommunications service in Japan by 2026 using solar-powered, stratospheric airships positioned 20 kilometers above Earth. These high-altitude platforms function as autonomous cell towers, using conventional base station technology and advanced 5G features like beamforming to provide low-latency, direct-to-device connectivity comparable to terrestrial networks—potentially outperforming satellite services like Starlink. With newly allocated spectrum and cutting-edge materials enabling long-duration flight, high power efficiency, and environmental resilience, these airships could stay aloft for months and replace dozens of ground towers. The initiative marks a significant shift in telecom infrastructure, enabled by recent global regulatory support for stratospheric systems and driven by a need for flexible, wide-area coverage solutions.
