European security 'top priority' as Denmark takes over EU presidency
Published on July 2, 2025
As it assumes the EU’s rotating presidency, Denmark plans to prioritize strengthening Europe’s defence and security in response to the instability sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized rearming Europe to meet new NATO spending goals, including 3.5% of GDP on military and 1.5% on broader security by 2035. Denmark also aims to advance EU defence initiatives, streamline military investment procedures, and support Europe's defence industry. Alongside defence, Denmark will focus on combating illegal migration, promoting stricter asylum policies, and seeking changes to European human rights laws to better align with national security concerns.
