Cerberus eyes potential bid for Darwin Port amid Australia’s push for local ownership
Published on May 27, 2025
Cerberus, a global private equity firm, has entered early discussions with Darwin Port's CEO, signalling interest in acquiring the strategically vital Australian port currently leased to Chinese company Landbridge. While Landbridge insists the port is not for sale and defends its ownership rights, the Australian government is actively exploring options to return the port to domestic hands due to rising geopolitical tensions and defence priorities. Officials highlight the port's significance for military logistics and key exports, and while no formal sale talks have occurred, a voluntary transaction is seen as preferable to avoid straining diplomatic ties with China. A formal bid from Cerberus is reportedly in development.
