Cerberus eyes Darwin Port

U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management has shown interest in acquiring the lease for Australia's strategically significant Darwin Port, currently operated by Chinese company Landbridge under a 99-year lease secured in 2015. While no formal negotiations have begun, Cerberus has met with port officials amid growing Australian government efforts to return control of the port, located near U.S. military operations, to domestic hands. The Chinese ownership has long been a geopolitical concern, especially for U.S.-Australia military cooperation. Though Landbridge insists the port is not for sale, analysts suggest a voluntary commercial sale could ease tensions without triggering economic retaliation from China, which opposes forced divestment.
