US Navy Will Test AI System to Help Crews Track Chinese Subs in the Pacific

The US, UK, and Australia are collaborating to test an artificial intelligence (AI) system aimed at enhancing the tracking capabilities of Chinese submarines in the Pacific. As part of the Aukus security alliance, the nations will employ AI algorithms to process sonar data collected by underwater devices during Pacific missions conducted by Boeing's P-8A maritime surveillance aircraft. The initiative seeks to improve the speed and accuracy of tracking Chinese submarines amidst concerns over China's military advancements. The testing is part of Aukus Pillar II, focusing on technological cooperation, including advancements in anti-submarine warfare, undersea vehicle launch and recovery, quantum technologies, and resilient AI. The broader Aukus partnership involves regional alliances to counter China, with Pillar I concentrating on Australia's nuclear-powered submarine capability. The collaboration aims to bolster defense capabilities and address evolving threats in the Indo-Pacific region.
