Uncrewed Submarine Will Launch, Recover Drone That Can Swim, Fly

Published on November 15, 2023

The U.S. Navy, through the Office of Naval Research (ONR), has contracted SubUAS to develop and demonstrate autonomous launch and recovery capabilities of the Naviator drone from and to an uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV). Valued at nearly $3.7 million, the Subsurface Autonomous Naviator Delivery (SAND) system aims to enable the Naviator, a versatile underwater and aerial drone, to autonomously undergo deployment and retrieval processes without human involvement. The Naviator, designed to seamlessly transition between flying and swimming, offers applications in mine detection, inspections of underwater structures, and search and rescue missions. This project aligns with the Navy's strategy to enhance autonomous capabilities for various operational scenarios.
