The Army’s New Drone Killer Can Fry Whole Swarms in Midair

The U.S. Army has acquired a cutting-edge anti-drone system called Leonidas, designed by Epirus to combat the threat of drone swarms. This novel technology employs microwave radiation to incapacitate multiple drones simultaneously, rendering them inoperative and causing them to plummet from the sky. Unlike traditional single-target countermeasures, Leonidas uses a wide beam of microwave energy to engage and disable numerous drones at once, effectively acting as an electromagnetic flamethrower against swarms. As part of the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office program, Epirus is set to deliver four prototypes for thorough testing to establish their efficacy against a range of unmanned aerial threats, highlighting a significant shift in defense tactics against the backdrop of drone warfare evolution demonstrated in conflicts like Ukraine and the Middle East.
