US Army Receives High-Powered Microwave ‘Swarm Drone Fryer’ As UAVs Emerge As Big Threat

Published on November 6, 2023

The US Army has acquired the Leonidas high-powered microwave (HPM) system, a counter-drone weapon from Epirus, a private defense tech firm, in response to the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and commercial drones in military scenarios. This HPM system emits intense and precise beams capable of disabling the internal electronics of drones, causing them to become non-functional or go out of control. As a part of a $66.1 million project named Indirect Fire Protection Capability-High-Power Microwave (IFPC-HPM), Epirus will provide four Leonidas prototypes over three years, in an effort led by the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO). This move aims to fortify air defense layers to protect troops, bases, and military formations. The broader initiative also involves the development of laser-based defense systems. With tensions rising in Europe, especially between Russia and Ukraine, the land has become a pivotal domain of warfare, emphasizing the need for such advanced defense mechanisms.
