DARPA Launches Initiative to Protect Tactical Mixed Reality Technologies

Published on October 31, 2023

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has initiated a program aimed at enhancing the security of the US military's mixed reality (MR) solutions against cognitive exploits. These exploits target the interaction between users and their virtual devices, leading to issues like cybersickness, false alarms, and reduced trust in MR platforms. The Intrinsic Cognitive Security (ICS) program will delve into mathematical approaches, termed "formal methods," to defend MR system designs from such attacks. The goal is to bolster the security of MR systems before they become widespread in military applications. Dr. Matthew Wilding, the DARPA ICS Program Manager, emphasized the importance of establishing protection methods through rigorous, mathematical-based practices to facilitate MR adoption in defense organizations. The ICS program, scheduled for three years, will proceed in two stages: initially developing solutions and understanding MR system properties, followed by validating these solutions' efficacy in MR setups using commercial prototypes.
