US sends drone ships to navy bases in Japan, signalling new role for driverless vessels in deterring China
The US deployed two multi-role unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to its naval bases in Japan, signifying a potential use of drone ships in its deterrence strategy against Beijing regarding Taiwan. The Mariner and Ranger, from the US Third Fleet, participated in the US Navy’s Integrated Battle Problem 23.2 exercise, marking the first time the US Navy sent driverless ships over a long distance. The exercise focused on testing USVs alongside manned vessels in the Indo-Pacific. These developments are seen as a response to China's growing naval capabilities. Taiwan is encouraged to use explosive USVs for deterrence with the US. China has also made significant advancements in USV technology. However, the US Navy's combat experience provides advantages in USV technology development.
