Unmanned vehicle systems: ready for takeoff

Published on October 24, 2023

The U.S. military is increasingly investing in unmanned vehicle systems, including unmanned aerial, surface, underwater, and ground vehicles. Congress is considering budgetary requests for various categories of these vehicles, including large unmanned surface vehicles (LUSVs), medium unmanned surface vehicles (MUSVs), extra-large unmanned undersea vehicles (XLUUVs), and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). These technologies have the potential to replace crewed aircraft for various missions, from aerial refueling to electronic warfare. The focus is on autonomy and AI capabilities, along with improving sensors, data processing, and decision-making. The challenges include testing and ensuring trust in AI capabilities, as well as the rapid evolution of technology. The use of UAS in battle scenarios is rapidly changing the operational tempo and outcomes of conflicts. Industry experts emphasize the need for quick adaptation and deployment of technology in response to emerging threats.
