HOMETECHNOLOGY NEWS Soaring Beyond GPS: How Quantum Photonic Chips Can Revolutionize Drone Navigation

Published on October 24, 2023

Researchers at the University of Rochester are developing photonic chips using a quantum technique called weak value amplification to replace the gyroscopes in drones. These chips aim to offer the same level of sensitivity as bulk optical gyroscopes but on much smaller and more portable scales. This technology has the potential to revolutionize drone navigation, enabling them to operate in areas where GPS signals are jammed or unavailable. The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and addresses the need for ultracompact navigation-grade gyroscopes as drones, UAVs, and satellites become smaller and more ubiquitous. The weak value amplification technique offers advantages over traditional methods by boosting measurement signals without introducing additional technical noise. The project includes collaborations with physicist Andrew Jordan and aims to engage underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
