US Army mulls attack drones, ground robots for Replicator

The U.S. Army is considering integrating one-way attack drones and ground-based robots into the Pentagon's newly introduced "Replicator" initiative. This initiative seeks to deploy large numbers of autonomous systems as a countermeasure to Chinese weapon stockpiles. The Deputy Defense Secretary, Kathleen Hicks, introduced the project in August, outlining plans to field thousands of these expendable systems within the next 18 to 24 months. Although specifics on system sourcing and deployment have been limited, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth highlighted potential areas suitable for the Replicator, including various-sized UAVs. She emphasized the significance of UAVs in both reconnaissance and payload delivery roles, as well as their defensive applications on the battlefield. The Replicator project, still in its infancy, is a result of the reallocation of existing funds and is anticipated to involve expenses reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.
