Coalition warfare requires coalition software

The former commander of the US Air Force’s Kessel Run software development center argues in this op-ed that the American military must play nicer with allies in tech development and cyberspace if it’s to win there.

In a recent op-ed, Enrique Oti, ex-commander of the US Air Force's Kessel Run software unit, emphasizes the urgent need for the US military to improve collaboration with global partners in tech and cyberspace to remain competitive. Despite the US leading the software development landscape, Oti stresses that it doesn’t have a monopoly. Thus, to leverage the full potential of software in modern warfare, the US Department of Defense (DoD) should prioritize: incorporating software from allies; expediting the software export process to allied nations; jointly developing software with coalition partners; and establishing resilient coalition networks. He argues that these aren't merely technical issues; even minor adjustments in policy and procedure could significantly influence the outcome in future warfare scenarios.
