NASA Studies Human Pilots to Advance Autonomous Air Taxis
NASA is actively working on ensuring the safety of fully autonomous flight technology for future air taxi and delivery drone operations. In collaboration with DARPA and Sikorsky, NASA's research team is studying how autonomous software can integrate with flight navigation tools, with a focus on human-pilot interaction with the new technology. Research pilots are participating in experiments that involve wearing special glasses to track eye movements and biometric sensors to monitor physiological responses during flight. This data will provide insights into pilot tendencies and stress levels, helping improve autonomous systems to navigate obstacles and hazards seamlessly, ultimately paving the way for air taxi operations in the U.S. airspace, where integration and safety are critical considerations.
