Pentagon creating ‘robot’ language so drones can communicate without humans
The Pentagon is investing millions to develop a common language enabling different drones to communicate and execute military tasks with limited human intervention. As the military pushes for autonomous drone operations, Pentagon scientists are addressing the challenge of coordinating drones from various manufacturers during military exercises. They aim to create a network allowing drones to operate collectively without external connectivity, necessitating a common language for seamless communication. The Pentagon funds the "Droidish: Collaborative Autonomous Vehicle Language" program with Unmanned Experts Inc., aiming to integrate it into defense initiatives, enhancing communication and coordination among drones. Despite progress, human oversight remains essential, especially for expanding Droidish's vocabulary for complex tasks. Ongoing experiments and an upcoming October test in Colorado will evaluate the effectiveness of Droidish in facilitating collective decision-making and tactical planning among drones.
