The USAF Pairs Piloted Jets With AI Drones

Has AI spawned the ultimate “loyal wingman”—or just the next smart weapon?

The U.S. Air Force is advancing its "loyal wingman" program, a concept that pairs piloted fighter jets like the F-22 and F-35 with AI-guided drones such as the XQ-58A Valkyrie for enhanced aerial warfare capabilities. Various countries including Russia, China, and India are exploring similar technologies, but the U.S. is moving toward a formal program with a requested funding of $5.8 billion over five years. The Valkyrie drone, produced by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, is highlighted for its cost-effectiveness and advanced capabilities, including stealth, speed, and the ability to carry smaller drones. However, experts remain divided on the strategic value of these drones in modern warfare, questioning whether traditional dogfighting tactics are still relevant and debating the merits of cheaper, less sophisticated drones currently in use in conflict zones like Ukraine.
