Aditya-L1: India successfully launches its first mission to the Sun

Published on September 2, 2023

India's space agency, ISRO, successfully launched its first Sun-observing mission, Aditya-L1, marking another significant achievement for the country just days after landing a probe near the Moon's south pole. Lifted off from Sriharikota, the mission aims to travel 1.5 million km from Earth to Lagrange point 1, a gravitational equilibrium point between the Earth and the Sun. From this position, Aditya-L1 will continuously monitor the Sun using seven scientific instruments to study aspects like the solar corona, photosphere, and solar activity, thereby enhancing our understanding of space weather and its impact on Earth. The mission is estimated to cost around 3.78 billion rupees ($46 million; £36 million) and is expected to provide valuable data not only for India but also for the global scientific community.
