Germany Agrees to Extend Stay of Patriot Missile Defence Batteries in Poland
Germany has agreed to Poland's request to extend the deployment of its Patriot missile defense batteries on Polish soil until the end of the year. Originally deployed in response to a Ukrainian air defense missile incident that caused fatalities in Poland, the Patriot systems and 300 German military personnel arrived in January with plans to stay until the end of June. However, Poland requested an extension until the end of 2023 as it readies its own Patriot systems ordered from the US, set to be operational by 2024. This move is seen as crucial for protecting equipment deliveries to Ukraine amid concerns about Russia's nuclear weapon transfers to Belarus and the presence of Wagner forces in the region. Additionally, a deal is in progress between Germany and Poland for a repair hub for Leopard tanks in Poland. The US has approved the sale of six Patriot batteries to Poland worth $15 billion, including launchers and missiles.
