Iran to establish Shahed UAV production sites in Russia and Belarus
Iran plans to establish production sites for its Shahed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in Russia and Belarus to enhance their availability to Russian forces in the event of an invasion of Ukraine. The move is aimed at addressing logistical challenges faced by Russia in transporting Iranian drones from Iran to Russia through the Middle East. Additionally, Iran seeks to generate revenue for its struggling economy by exchanging Iranian drones for cash from Russia. The Shahed-136 UAV, also known as a 'suicide drone,' has been in service with the Iranian military since 2021 and has been used by Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The UK and other NATO allies have been providing military assistance to Ukraine, focusing on air defense capabilities to counter Russian air superiority in the region.
