Saudi-Turkish defense collaboration set to bolster drone manufacturing

Published on August 7, 2023

Saudi Arabia has entered into agreements with prominent Turkish defense firms to enhance its defense capabilities and boost local manufacturing. Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) signed a localization agreement with Baykar, a Turkish defense company, to strengthen the Kingdom's manufacturing capacities for electronic systems, mechanical components, and aircraft structures, particularly focusing on drone manufacturing. The collaboration aims to bolster national defense industry support and self-reliance, capitalizing on the growing Saudi-Turkish strategic alliance in the defense sector. In a separate move, Saudi Arabia's National Co. for Mechanical Systems also signed memorandums of understanding with Turkish firms Aselsan and Roketsan to localize the production of ammunition and drone system sensors. These agreements follow SAMI's significant defense contract in July 2023 for the purchase of Turkish drones from Baykar.
