Published on August 3, 2023

During Exercise Talisman Sabre in Northern Australia, the Australian Defence Force conducted trials of new ground uncrewed systems (GUS). Soldiers from the 13th Engineer Regiment evaluated and used the unmanned systems, showcasing the growing significance of unmanned innovation in the military sector. The exercise, involving over 30,000 military personnel from 13 nations, aims to test and demonstrate various unmanned land-based robotics capabilities. The Australian Army has previously demonstrated autonomous armoured vehicles equipped with remote weapon stations, while internationally, Rheinmetall's Mission Master "Silent Partner" fully electric autonomous unmanned ground vehicle underwent successful trials in Estonia. In the US, contracts have been announced for the design and prototyping of a new optionally manned fighting vehicle for the US Army, the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle.
