Industry pushing for AI, big data to drive strategic defense decision-making
The defense industry is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to manage the exponential increase in mission data. AI is being integrated into various defense sectors, from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), with the aim of revolutionizing defense operations by accelerating the kill chain.
The combination of AI and big data is facilitating real-time battlefield applications, providing more sophisticated situational awareness and supporting mission planning and multidomain operations. However, challenges remain in transferring data across older systems, and the defense industry is focusing on optical communications and rethinking data utilization.
The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) has also prioritized the utilization of big data, establishing the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) to centralize OSD's digital and AI capabilities.
To leverage big data successfully, open standards and interoperability are crucial, and the defense industry is emphasizing the modular open systems approach (MOSA) and zero-trust architecture. Balancing the democratization and security of data presents challenges, but the industry aims to overcome them through smart policy, robust insider threat programs, and innovation.
