AI leaders call for rules, countermeasures against rogue systems

A panel of AI leaders addressed the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on privacy, technology, and the law, emphasizing the need to secure the emerging artificial intelligence supply chain and fund countermeasures against rogue AI systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei highlighted concerns about AI misuse in biological weapons, stating that rapid AI advances could enable more actors to conduct large-scale biological attacks, posing a grave threat to U.S. national security. 

The hearing also discussed potential AI threats and the possibility of oversight through federal regulation and global agreements. There are plans to diversify the AI supply chain by developing manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Germany. Witness Yoshua Bengio recommended Congress create an AI framework for regulations, as the achievement of human-level intelligence is now believed to be within a few years or decades, rather than decades or centuries.
