Slovenia unveils transport aircraft, helicopter acquisition plan
The Slovenian Ministry of Defence has made amendments to its acquisition program for the period between 2023 and 2026. The country plans to purchase six multipurpose helicopters and a C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft for its military. The total value of these aircraft purchases is estimated to be about €159 million ($176.9 million) for the C-27J Spartan and €195.2 million ($217.2 million) for the helicopters.
The C-27J Spartan, manufactured by Italy's Leonardo, will be the second aircraft of its kind to be ordered by Slovenia. The government has approved the necessary amendments for both acquisition projects.
The main purpose of procuring the new helicopters is to replace the current fleet of Bell 412 helicopters and enhance the operability and availability of the Slovenian military's helicopter fleet. The focus is on developing air transport capabilities with medium transport and light multi-purpose helicopters. The statement from the defense ministry indicates that additional helicopters will be purchased after 2028.
Furthermore, in the years 2023 to 2026, the Slovenian Ministry of Defence has other significant acquisition plans, including buying new eight-wheel-drive vehicles for the country's land forces and acquiring the German-made IRIS-T medium-range air defense system.
