The operational — and political — benefits of Turkey’s new warship
The Turkish Navy receives its largest-ever amphibious assault ship, the TCG Anadolu. The military will use the vessel to deploy heavy helicopters, light-attack aircraft, and drones. The announcement comes from Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The ship will, specifically, carry the TB-3 armed drone and Kizilelma, the uncrewed combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). These drones will be capable of launching from the Anadolu and are both developed and manufactured by Turkish defense firm Baykar. While the full operational capability of the vessel has not yet been attained, its very construction may have geopolitical motivations. President Erdoğan, in the midst of a re-election campaign, and after Turkey was removed from the multinational Joint Strike Fighter program due to buying Russian S-400 air defense systems, acted to fill the void. Such efforts in military modernization may boost his popularity at home.
