Can the Pentagon use ChatGPT? OpenAI won’t answer.

While OpenAI’s ‘Usage policies’ explicitly forbid the use of its software for both ‘Military and warfare’ and ‘high risk government decision-making’, it is not clear how this can be enforced in practice. Currently the military, as all other sectors, are at least exploring the use of ChatGPT and thinking about future integration and application of such generative AI.

The military use cases are virtually endless, with ChatGPT, for example, being able to support intelligence analysts to make sense of data. For the moment, however, OpenAI does neither comment on how its ethics policy will be enforced nor on whether working with the defense sector is really out of the question.
