G-7 should adopt ‘risk-based’ A.I. regulation, ministers say

Group of Seven nations (G7) finds common ground on the matter of emerging artificial intelligence regulation. The G7 digital ministers agree as of Sunday, April 30, 2023, that the road forward should be one of ‘risk-based’ regulation for AI. The framework of the agreement comes as European lawmakers introduce sweeping AI regulations.

The ministers were careful to emphasize that the nature of the regulations is not burdensome and should ‘preserve an open and enabling environment’ for the development of AI technologies. Such technologies ought to be consistent with democratic values founded upon a ‘common vision’ for trustworthy AI. Still, as generative AI explodes in popularity, Japan’s industry minister Yasutoshi Nishimura described his country’s hope for ‘agile or flexible governance, rather than preemptive, catch-all regulation.’ The defense and security implications of generative AI specifically and near-future AI generally have been making headlines recently, with an eye toward the potential regulations that may stifle or incentivize further advancements in the integration of AI with defense technologies.
