Beam me up: Israel’s new laser system is a security game changer

Published on May 1, 2023

Israel-based defense firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is developing a new, Iron Dome-like security system that intercepts airborne threats using an advanced laser system. Described as a kind of ‘optical shield,’ the Magen Or (Iron Beam) program under construction at Rafael in collaboration with Israel’s Ministry of Defense is expected to be ready for operational use by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 2024.

The system would allow the IDF to intercept a range of airborne threats, including mortar bombs, rockets, anti-tank missiles, and drones, among other potential means of assault. Laser technology offers precision and cost-effectiveness when contrasted with the currently-used Iron Dome air defense system. It is noted to have been in development for at least 17 years and comes as the threat of unauthorized and hostile uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) leads to significant counter-measures in the region.
